Beat the Summer Doldrums with Family-Friendly Fun
Summer break is here! Now every day is all about sleeping in, hanging out at the pool, and then…. what? Luckily, Denver is full of kid-friendly activities. We compiled a list of kid-approved outings for our wonderful Reunion moms and dads. So if you’re trying to figure out how to survive the next three months, this handy guide will help you through it.
Denver Zoo / Denver Museum of Nature & Science
The Zoo is a classic family outing and an educational one to boot. Here, kids can learn about conservation, how to be a responsible zookeeper, and how delicious giraffes taste. (Kidding about that last part!) And if your zoo day gets rained out, you can always duck into the nearby Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park
Every kid loves a day at a theme park and we have access to an awesome one just west of downtown Denver. Water Park admission is free with a Theme Park admission, so you get unlimited rides at two parks for the price of one! We advise buying tickets online or at your local King Soopers (instead of at the gate) for significant savings.
Denver doesn’t have an ocean, but you can still see mermaids! Yes – they perform every 60 minutes during opening hours. Kids can learn about the Amazon, the open ocean, the rainforest, and many aspects of underwater life. Your family can also enjoy eating at the Aquarium’s restaurant while sitting in front of a 50,000 gallon tank. (No, you don’t get to pick out your fish to grill up.)
Hammond’s Candy Factory Tour
This is a fun tour where kids can learn how lollipops, candy canes, and other treats are made — and the best part is you get free samples! Large video screens throughout the factory help give you an “up close and personal” look at your favorite treats being pulled, twisted, and shaped by hand. Tours only last 30 minutes and run every half hour.
Don’t let the name fool you, this is a beautiful hike in Loveland, just an hour north of Reunion. There you’ll be surrounded by towering rock formations and you can take excellent family photos with beautiful vistas as a backdrop. The total trail is only 6 miles round-trip and dogs are allowed on leashes. This would be a perfect Father’s Day hike and picnic!
Now that you know where the kid-friendly entertainment is, pack up snack bags, swimsuits, and/or hiking gear, and get ready to go! And please share any photos you take at these activities. We love seeing our Reunion residents get out and about and have family fun around town.
