Memorial Day Doings in Denver
Posted on 16 May 2022
Since 1868, Americans have set aside the end of May to honor the military personnel who have lost their lives while serving in the armed forces. Whether you want to stay close to your Reunion home or get away for the long weekend, check out these Colorado happenings for a meaningful Memorial Day weekend that celebrates the world made possible by the sacrifices of our servicepeople.
Nederland Memorial Day Ceremony and Carousel of Happiness
May 30, noon – 1 pm
Just west of Boulder in Nederland, this event helps memorialize the brave experiences of our fallen men and women in uniform. The Carousel of Happiness was crafted by a local carver and Vietnam War veteran to help him process his memories and help “spread peace, happiness, and joy” to his community. The ceremony will include a somber rendition of Taps and invite attendees to remember the veterans from their lives before transitioning to a silent and powerful riderless turn of the carousel then opening back up to the public.
May 27-29
It’s important to remember that we are able to lead happy and carefree lives thanks to those who lost theirs in defense of freedom. If you need to smile this weekend, head into the Rocky Mountains for three days of hilarity with over 30 confirmed headliners from The Comedy Cellar, Netflix, HBO, CBS, and NBC. Vail Village will tickle your funny bone and also provide family-friendly programming featuring a street magician at the RocketFizz stage.
May 28, 1:45-9:30 pm
On a weekend this meaningful we love that local events provide entertainment while also raising funds for important causes. Headliners Chris Isaak and Ingrid Andress are coming to LoDo with Denver Day of Rock, a completely FREE event. The festival brings awareness to the work of Amp the Cause, a Denver nonprofit that raises funds and awareness for other local organizations serving children and their families. In addition to the four stages, food trucks, and a beer garden, Day of Rock provides a music-filled day of entertainment with kid-friendly offerings that range from Monster Mural, balloon artists, and face painters to a silent disco and more.
Commerce City Memorial Day Parade
May 30, 9:30am
After a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the proud local tradition of the Commerce City Memorial Day Parade is finally back. Preceded by a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park to commemorate those who have fallen in service to our nation, the parade itself starts at E. 64th and Newport and continues past Central Elementary School to the corner of E. 60th and Colorado. Bring your whole family to this evocative community event to honor those who have given us so much through their selflessness.
However you spend your Memorial Day weekend, take a moment of thanks for the men and women who offered their lives serving our country. And to those of you who continue to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces, we salute you. Have a safe, happy, and healthy holiday!
