Make a Splash with a New Kitchen Backsplash

Your counter backsplash is an important part of your kitchen here at Reunion – it’s both functional and aesthetically pleasing. So if you’re thinking about changing out your backsplash, consider function first – does it protect the walls from moisture and spills? Then consider the aesthetics – does it work with the countertops, flooring and cabinetry in the room?

Getting the function part down is pretty easy, but picking out the color and texture that will bring your whole kitchen together is the challenge. There are so many styles and options to choose from! So we’ve put together a list of ideas to help guide you in picking out the best backsplash to install.

Tile

This is the most common backsplash material. However there are hundreds of ways to create a unique tile design. White subway tile is always a classic and elegant choice – and very chic. Laying tile in a herringbone pattern (resembling a fish skeleton) is a nice look for Moroccan or ocean-inspired kitchens. If you want to really make an impression, the chevron pattern is also bold and beautiful and you can come up with a striking accent color.

Beadboard

This lightweight and versatile product works really well for backsplashes. Use a washable paint or a marine varnish to ensure no water stains. If you’re wanting to use raw, untreated board, you can always fit a clear glass cover over it for protection.

Brick

Give your kitchen a rustic and industrious feel with an exposed brick accent wall behind your countertops. Veneer brick is thin enough to cut around outlets for a seamless look and you can cover the brick with a glass panel behind the stovetop.

Marble

Marble will never go out of style when it comes to kitchens. For a modern look, have matching backsplash and countertops in the same slab of marble. Or use a bright-colored marble backsplash against a neutral countertop for eye-catching appeal.  

Copper

This metal is both trendy and timeless. Give it a shiny finish for a modern feel or burnish it for a more rustic style. For a real conversation piece, you can even construct a backsplash out of copper pennies. But the best part – copper is antimicrobial, meaning it can kill a wide range of harmful bacteria!

Windows

This is perfect for smaller kitchens that could use more natural light. Just make sure to check with your local building inspection codes before adding additional windows to your home.

Mix and Match

With so many gorgeous textures to choose from, why settle for one? Mix and match different styles and patterns of tile, or mix tile with chalkboard, a mirror, copper pennies, or even beadboard. The possibilities are endless!
