Get Outdoors With the Kids

Don’t let video games, Netflix, and phone screens keep your family cooped up inside this summer. Kids (and parents!) need to get off the couch and out into the natural world. Especially for those who live in Colorado, where the outdoor lifestyle is required by law — at least, we’re pretty sure it’s the law.

Before you push the kiddos out the door into that bright sunlight and force them to breathe fresh air, don’t forget to slather on sunscreen and plop a hat and sunglasses onto their heads — our Colorado sun does not mess around. It’s also a good idea to pack snacks, drinks, and Band-Aids for those inevitable boo-boos.

Ready to head out? If you need suggestions beyond the backyard, we have a few.

Water World

Get Outdoors With the Kids

Did you know that one of America’s largest family water parks is located just 15 minutes north of Denver? Open Memorial Day through Labor Day, Water World features 50 attractions for the entire family — including water slides, wave pools, whitewater rapids, and speed slides across 64 landscaped acres. This year, Water World is celebrating their 40th anniversary, so look for special pricing and events for this memorable occasion.

Aurora Reservoir

Get Outdoors With the Kids

If you prefer open water to water parks, the Aurora Reservoir may be an ideal way to spend a whole day. Named “The Best Park for Fishing” by the Denver Westword, the reservoir offers recreation activities such as boating, fishing, paddle-boarding, swimming, scuba, and even archery. A day pass is $10 and the park is open every day of the summer.

With seemingly millions of things to do outside this summer, you don’t even have to go far to enjoy your spectacular local surroundings. You could always enjoy a family bike ride along our parks and trails or spend an afternoon lounging by the pool at our Rec Center. We hope to see you out and about and we hope you have a happy sun-filled summer!
